Start with the task
Indoor navigation, vehicle use, field work and outdoor travel place different demands on a light. Output alone does not describe utility. Consider the required distance, the duration of use and whether the light must be operated with gloves or one hand.
What to compare
- Beam pattern and usable range for the intended environment.
- Controls that are deliberate, understandable and reachable in the intended carry position.
- Battery type, charging method and realistic access to spares.
- Runtime at useful settings, not only the highest advertised output.
- Weather resistance, mounting compatibility and pocket carry dimensions.
Common errors
- Choosing only by maximum lumen number.
- Buying a light whose charging system cannot be supported in normal travel or field use.
- Ignoring heat, runtime and the ability to identify the selected mode.
- Assuming a handheld light and a mounted light solve the same problem.
