Separate carrier from armor
A carrier organizes and supports a compatible protective insert; it is not itself a protection rating. Read the retailer’s documentation for the exact plate model, size, rating standard, manufacture date and care requirements.
What to compare
- Published rating and test standard for the exact armor model, not a general product family.
- Plate dimensions, cut and thickness matched to the carrier’s stated compatibility.
- Coverage and fit that permit normal movement, seated work and access to essential equipment.
- Total system weight, including plates, carrier, pouches and medical equipment.
- Manufacturer guidance on storage, inspection, warranty and replacement.
Common errors
- Assuming all plates of the same nominal size or rating fit the same carrier.
- Buying without checking the manufacturer’s size chart.
- Confusing a training insert or soft panel with the protection stated for a hard armor plate.
- Adding load until movement, heat management and access are compromised.
